I’ve been surrounding myself with SO many coaches lately, and let me tell you: What amazing people. It takes a special kind of person to dedicate your entire life to helping others on the most intimate levels. I’ve been talking to tons of coaches through my Behind the Business Summit (which you should absolutely check out), and I’m learning that there are so many different kinds. Most people have heard of business coaches or life coaches, but I’m learning that there is such a thing as a life AND business coach. They do both. What a skill!
Of course, there are a bunch of different labels that coaches use to define themselves and their services. I encourage you to take a look around and see if any of them speak to you deeply. Overall, though, I believe there’s a special kind of importance to bringing on a coach who can guide you in both your personal and professional life.
Personal or Professional… It’s Just Life!
This might be controversial but stay with me. I believe we should stop separating personal and professional life. At the end of the day, they are just fragments of a whole, and treating one without the other is to forget just how intertwined they are! This is especially true for work-from-home moms who don’t have the luxury of separating office life from their homes. They’re taking work calls with screaming toddlers in the background. This type of work is also really new in our society, so taking decades-old generic work advice and trying to apply it to this lifestyle is just… insufficient.
These Coaches Understand Complexity and Have Innovative Ideas
Life and business coaches go beyond work advice or life advice. They want to discuss how your personal and professional life affect each other, and they want to help you develop ways to improve both. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that an unsatisfactory professional life can leak out of its borders and start making your personal life hell. I know you might even feel that personally in your own life. The same can happen the other way around — your family life or dating life can become so tumultuous that you can’t help but bring it to work and ruin the quality of your efforts.
I love the idea of both a life and business coach because it’s more “holistic.” They look at your life as a whole, pinpoint the issues no matter where they are, and they create a plan that will help you get back on track as a whole person.
Because these coaches see your life holistically, they can also have innovative ideas about how to help you grow and move the needle for your goals. They might have some amazing advice for improving your relationship with your spouse which tackles the same difficulties you have when relating to your coworkers. Or maybe your lack of confidence in raising your kids is also connected to your lack of confidence in leadership for your business.
Wow. Who would have thought?!
