Why talk if no one is listening? Well, it’s not quite that simple, but it serves its purpose here. Without an audience, you can’t expect to increase sales. But how do you get from zero to hero? I want to break this down because it’s one of the biggest challenges new entrepreneurs face, and it’s one that I can seriously help you with!
There IS a Time and Place for Talking to No One
It might not make sense at first to hear that you should talk when no one is listening, but you absolutely should embrace this period in your journey. At the very beginning — when you’ve just created that website, written the bio to your Instagram, or just started producing your first podcast episode — you shouldn’t expect anyone to be on the other end. It’s unreasonable to believe that you will stand out in the sea of noise right from the start. So then, what do you do?
You just start. You keep going even when no one is watching. When STILL no one is watching, you keep going! Entrepreneurs fail when they let a little disappointment and little too much time without results get in the way of them persuing their dreams.
Talking even when no one is listening will:
- Build up a vault of content
- Allow you to experiment with topics
- Help you get into your flow and troubleshoot
- Start using analytics and feedback to fine-tune what works and what doesn’t
See? Shouting into the void isn’t a waste of time! If nothing else, you’ll learn things about yourself that you never would have unless you tried.
Reverse-Engineer Your Audience Goals
Once you’ve accepted that no one will be around for a while, you can get serious about building your audience as you learn. The best advice I can give any new entrepreneur is to reverse-engineer your goals. When it comes to getting an audience, you first need to understand what you want. Who do you want listening? Who would best benefit from what you have to offer? How can picking a specific audience help you reach your business goals?
Here’s my recipe to starting at your goal and working backward: Figure out your customer avatar by dreaming up the ideal customer who would listen to you and be interested in your products or services. Outline exactly what aesthetics and messaging they’d be drawn to and tailor all of your brand’s assets to that outline. Find the perfect types of media they’d love the most, and start building up your brand’s presence on platforms that support that type of media. Start batching tons of content that would speak to their needs directly with that media on those platforms. Troubleshoot, analyze user behavior and engagement, and keep fine-tuning!
See how it makes no sense to start with perfection??? You can’t begin at perfect without knowing what perfect is!
My Journey With Audience-Building
I’ve built my audience using that recipe above, and let me tell you… it’s powerful. I’m so happy seeing progress every day and moving the needle towards my dreams. Right now, I’m writing my first book and my top priority is to build the perfect audience for my future book sales. I’m sure you’ve noticed, but I’ve been cooking with 2 amazing podcasts — The Making Mommy Moves Show and The Power Couple Show — publishing my content to YouTube and social media, and sharing exclusive tips and motivation on this blog and to my VIPs on The LYSST 🙂
If you choose to use my recipe for building your audience, please share with me how it’s going and any goals you meet! I’m so excited to hear from you. I’m so passionate about helping other entrepreneurs move the needle that I’ve started up my own content marketing business MAMA MEDIA. Please head over to our MAMA MEDIA website if you’re looking for some extra help in podcasting, YouTube video production, social media management, and more!
