Episode 7 Transcript: You Don’t Have To Do It All!
Hi everyone! Thanks again for tuning in for the Making Mommy Moves show. This is your host Alyssa Morton, and you can call me Lyss if you prefer — that’s better.
So in this episode, we’re going to talk about delegating. Delegating! It’s my favorite word. I think everybody needs it in their life. Delegating!
So let’s peel out that part a little bit, shall we? So, I know in my life, if I can do less, and still get the same amount of work done, that’s the best case scenario. So let’s talk about this. What are things that you can be doing in your life as a mom that you can delegate? What are the things that you want to do that you can’t do because you don’t have the time or because you have other things like you work full time. Or you want to be spending more time with your kids, but whatever it is you want to do?
Let’s talk about that. So I know for me, I want to be able to hire a cleaning service so that I don’t have to clean my house and still live in a cleaner type house that isn’t infested with bugs. And that doesn’t look like my kids drew all over. I’m not there yet. But that is a goal. I promise. It will be happening within the next year.
Goal number two, are you trying to eat healthy meal prep? You don’t have to do the meal prepping yourself. You can hire out the meal prep. There are so many companies that will meal prep for you. I know here in Jersey, I can think of probably four different ones, top of my head, that will deliver it to your house and everything so you have literally nothing to do other than eat the food. And if you’re still not eating the food, that’s a whole other podcast.
Number three: for the moms out there that need to delegate their life. Hire a freaking babysitter if you need one! I know I cannot get anything done without daycare. That just that’s the way that I run my life and I thank God every day for daycare. Maybe you need a babysitter or nanny or somebody that you trust a family member a friend, somebody that you can delegate your kids to while you need to be productive, whatever that means for you. Maybe that’s some self-care time so that you can go get a massage or so that you can get a facial or so that you can go to the gym or take a class. I don’t know whatever you want to do in your life. Have girls’ night, have a date night. Those are things that you can be delegating.
So that’s for my mommies out there.
For my mompreneurs. We need to delegate everything in our business that is eating our time. As business owners, our time is valuable. Okay, so let’s just put that out there. Whatever you want to be making in a year. You need to equate that to your minute time, figure that out, what’s your minute wage, and then come back.
So whatever you are doing in your business, you need to make sure that it’s worth your time to be doing. Could you be paying somebody $10 to $15 an hour to do the tasks that you are doing even though it happens quicker because your minute wage is going to be way higher than the $10 to $15 an hour that you’re paying somebody else to do it? So figure out what your time is worth to you and you will quickly realize everything that you can delegate.
Bookkeeping: if you hate it like me, you can be delegating. Website design. You can be delegating social media, you should absolutely have somebody handling that for you. Because like we talked about in the previous episode, it is a very quick time sucker. You can delegate literally anything possible. For me, like in my floral design business, I will hire freelancers to help get my designing done, or to help me set up a wedding so that I don’t have either, and that opens up the income potential so that I can be at one place and they can be in another place. Or ideally, I have a team at all the places and I can be doing whatever I want to be doing.
So I know you might be thinking, there’s a couple things that you could be thinking. One could be “Yeah, that sounds nice, but I don’t have the money to delegate.” Or you could be thinking that maybe “I do it better than anybody else I’d hire” or you might just be kind of a micromanager. You know, I’ll just kind of throw that out there. These are your own problems that you need to solve.
So as far as you don’t have the money to hire somebody to delegate, take a good look at what you’re spending your money on. Reevaluate that mindset. Because it might just be a temporary thing that you need to cut back on some expenses in order to outsource some things because they’re going to generate you more money in your business. So just to put a little bow on that. If you have a $200 a minute wage, if you want to be making several million dollars a year, you need to reevaluate this and go back to what you’re spending your money on.
You need to make sure that you are doing valuable work. If you’re spending three hours editing your content or creating your social media, or finding the audio files to use on Instagram or Tiktok or whatever you’re doing. That’s not valuable work for your time. If you’re trying to make multi-million dollars a year. You need to outsource that. Give that to somebody else to take care of and watch everything exponentially grow.
Not only are you going to be helping yourself by generating more income, but you’re also going to be helping anybody that you outsource to because you are giving more jobs to the economy. You are helping somebody else to pay their mortgage, put food on the table, do the things bring them joy, this is their side hustle. So outsource everything so that I can do it myself mentality.
We need to unpack that a little bit. So if you have that mindset that I can do better than whoever I’m gonna hire. Are you a service-based business or are you a product-based business? If it’s a service base and whoever you hired isn’t doing the job correctly, maybe you need to consider hiring different people. Maybe it’s not a good personality or they don’t have the skill set required to do the job. That’s a big thing. You need to make sure that the people that you’re hiring are doing things that are comparable to those skill sets.
If you have somebody that’s super outgoing and they’re behind a computer screen, maybe they should be in sales. Maybe that’s how they’re going to generate more money for your business. Or if you have somebody that’s really not organized, maybe they shouldn’t be organizing all your projects. Maybe have that personality match. There’s this website that you can go to called Kobe, and you’re able to take a test to figure out your personality scores. I recommend doing this for all of your hires, just to make sure that it’s a good personality match for whatever position you want to hire them for.
If you’re a product-based business, sometimes done is better than perfect. This is depending on the task, obviously, but reevaluate who you’re hiring and if they’re good for the position, and likely you’ll figure out the issue going on in your business.
So maybe you’re just starting out and you want to figure out how you can delegate. Let’s do a couple of things to ease you into it. Don’t go hire a full-time salary right away. Firstly, outsourcing your tasks that you don’t like doing or that you’re not good at. Maybe this is a part-time position. Maybe you’re outsourcing to a separate company that does this full-time. But this is huge. And will save you a lot of time and help you do more valuable work that you enjoy doing to maybe you need to take on another job in order to pay whoever you need to be doing.
This was a hard one to swallow, but sometimes you just need a little bit more money in your business in order to make it grow quicker. So maybe I could put on your hustle hat for a couple of months in order to make that happen. But do whatever you need to do to afford the help that you need to that you can sell quicker.
So some examples. Maybe you can do something that you’re actually good at as a side hustle in order to pay your way to scale your business. So, for me, for example, I’m discovering I’m actually pretty good at building websites. I’ve done it a couple of times. So potentially I could do that as a side hustle, help other businesses redo their website. In exchange, I really don’t like doing like bookkeeping. That’s just an idea I don’t really super enjoy doing but it’s something that I’m good at it could help speed the process along and it could also help me create a little bit of income actually cuz you could charge a lot for that.
So I think I touched on pretty much everything I wanted to talk about as far as delegating. I know that the hardest thing that you can do is just let go, but I promise the second you do, you’re gonna feel so free. It’s like being in three places at the same time as soon as you’re able to outsource tasks because when you’re doing this, you’re able to still get the work done without actually doing it yourself. And I can’t even tell you how freeing that is. I promise, do it.
Outsource something today and you’re going to feel like a whole new one. Thanks again for tuning into the Making Mommy Moves show.
